Come Let Me Take You Away

Come, come let me take you away
From these headless phantoms roaming the terrace of filth
And brainless citizens losing their ways in this map of maps,
From these screeching shadows of betrayal on immoral walls every night.
Come, let us leave
By the last train of justice from this world of bibelots.

Oh dear, don't look on those blood spots on that rail yard.
Don't look on those blood spots on that rail yard.
Oh dear.

In this station of the hideous midnight,
Owls have perched on the rusty roofs;
Their hooting sends shivers
Down spineless passengers.
Crooked faces with deformed desires
Greet the new moon
When wolves of the fairy tales
Howl.

This is the last train
Leaving the ramshackle station:
Opaque masks of decrepit skin
Shrouded white cream
And deathly screams from faraway villages
Greeted the shuddering train.

The train is whistling.
Come, let's aboard.

Through the thoroughfares of caged light,
The bogies see strange notices hung on passing signals
And peculiar forests by the side
And run like light into nothingness.
The guard waves the green flag
Of peace:
Away, away;
Far away from the distant city
That wore veils of death,
The red flag is nowhere.

Perforating the cold December fog,
The train runs into a misty doom:
Towards a palace of dreams.

I imagined children
Peeking out from dim households
In horrible fear
Of this surreal train.

It is the remorseful agitation
Of past sins that surrenders us to our Fates.
It is this deadly forest surrounding this train
It is this cold wet night of merciless winter.

Back in the dead station
At half past one
Addictions arrived in a beautiful lady’s
Worthless bijouterie.
The stranded phantoms were too late.
They missed the train.
They were to sink with the world.

The addictions came in like approaching storms
Whistling through glassless windows:
Reminding passengers how they fled
The ramshackle station.

The coaches jerked like rattling skeletons
In ancient coffins during earthquakes.

Flustered by the hazy surrealism of
These hazy surroundings,
Insomniacs in compartments slept like the dead—
Drunken with the whiskey of freedom.

The storms rained caustic,
Wiping the floor dust
Of this night train
Whistling through the thoroughfares
Of Justice.

I heard the mind’s clock striking
Three.
Tick.
Tick.
Tick.
The countdown to dawn began.

Stuffed corridors of red bogies
Filled with the useless belongings
Of earthly life
Were to be discarded.
The next station would not allow them.

We were ‘waiting for the sun’.

Hours passed in restless sleep
Dreaming dreams of torn pasts
And listening to crooked tales
About crooked fairies.

The sun cleared the empty morning vision:
As the train receded into the station
Of this beautiful morning,
All the sights dissolved
Like dust into the air:

The train had gone up—
It had gone up
At
One Sixty Five Degrees to the horizontal
Till it reached this place.

It was a different town:
More like a Spanish village
Of the olden days.

Far below as the street went down
Sights reached fire and destruction—
You were looking down—
You were just looking down.

We were cleared—
Cleared.

We cannot hope to revive that erstwhile station of the night—
It’s burning.
But we can gather the ashes
And offer it to the false god.

Come let us live in this place
Of new-found justice;
Away, away
From those blood spots on rusted rail lines.

THEY WERE LITTERING THE ROAD

Antiquated peals of laughter of the modern times
Saw
Shameless woodpeckers pecking at ramshackle furniture
Made
Of wood of quality
That
Was losing its old shine.

Little dim lights were fading unto dusk;
The blinds had been forgotten
The coffee was spilt
And the rain was caustic.

“If the doors of perception.....”
Went on limitlessly in a
Distracted mind:
A deadly war of the mind
A hundred dead soldiers,
Villages lying still with napalm,
And thundering copters spraying
Phosgene
Into a deathless country.
It’s just the mind.

Skeletal fragments
Like
Wet Puppets
Were dancing to the tune
Of
Their master;
A leg came off,
Then a head came off.
O it’s just the mind!

You were lost in the dates
Of your lost past
A small swollen face greeted you
From behind the mirror;
Waiting to wail.
You didn’t smile.
It meant nothing to you.

They were littering the road.
They
Were
Ignorant.

From face to face,
From smile to smile,
From frown to frown,
From neglect to neglect,
From dawn to dusk.

You saw emotionless sights.
You were unaffected.
When you were waiting to
Laugh,
You thought you shouldn’t interact.

You didn’t care
You just didn’t care.

They Heard The Unheard Cries Of Laughter

There walked the pigeon
On the edge of a wet precarious terrace:
Looked left and right,
And flew away.

They built Red Grilles to constrain spirits—
Crimson-red flowers
From the interns of a sun-baked hovel
Were being taken to graveyards.

Dubious ceremonies of confused happiness—
Scatter a pinch of salt over this
Ocean of falsity,
And drown with the crowd.

They are ignorant.
They are heartless.
They are false.

I dreamt of a giant last night—
He was distilling waste water
Into the ocean—
And thousand fishermen with
Scattered boats
Were keeping their rods bent.

Listen to the cheer of the crowd
And watch smiles staring at you;
Don’t go deep in your thoughts
Or the giant might invade your dreams!

An empty bottle in an empty classroom,
Rolling and rolling—
No water, no colour—
But still rolling.

Sounds of hundred feet beyond
The Barbed Wires—
Soldiers marching?
But where to?
Beyond the wires
There was but something else to be seen:
A ‘battalion’ of ragamuffins
Dirtying the street—
Spreading foul stench that irked
A school-going child.

There are ways to look at the world—
Fake faces storming households, or
Real faces loving each other—
What we see is but our own vision—
And as they had said they ‘flock together’.

They beheld the great ocean—
Some rich eyes went till the farthest
Fisherman—
Some wooden eyes went till the cruel shark
Beneath;
While the rest looked straight up—
Didn’t know if the ocean was blue.

You were mistaken—
You saw
Shameless laughter, Inebriated teetotalers;
Flasks of water waiting to be distilled
And hundred emotionless sights.
And you were awestruck.
You were enticed by the beautiful cloak of
Relation.

The cry of laughter—
When your rib-cage was waiting
To be ruptured,
Nothing much happened.

You laughed to cry—
You just laughed to cry.

My Lonely Swing

My lonely swing at the end
Of the green grass
Still creaks in this heat:
Some leaves resting there
And hundred raindrops wetting it,
It sings it lonely song.
Maddened by the wind
And comforted by the tree,
The rusted swing still creaks
In the dusty afternoon.
On and on.

Rusted, dirty and unkempt—
Back in the corner,
Lies what once had been my ride.
Webs of delusion
Spun by the spiders
Have shrouded the pathways
And the singer can’t be heard anymore.

Lights of the long lane
Still guide the stranger;
But to a lonely land.
A lonely land—
Where no one speaks,
Where no one plays,
Where everyone has deserted
Everyone else;

At a stroll that evening,
My eyes pictured fan blades
Moving at the speed of life
And the light becoming dim.
Gaudily dressed women
Made it look like Autumn
While it was summer still.

A broken soul thinks and speaks
To himself and me,
His doubts and his sorrows
Are all about the bad world;
A thinker now, he is beginning to learn.

The last time I noticed ‘Land sold’
Was nine years back,
And since then I haven’t treaded that field.
Some have gone away,
Some have passed away;
But their memories still linger in my old lane:
My old lane.

Lifeless, desolate and silent—
The dust-covered lane
Still cries out to its lost people to return:
To return.

Here, away from the breezy memories
Of the erstwhile days,
I watch thousand raindrops
Sliding down the roofs
And take frequent walks
In a drenched evening—
Thinking, Dreaming, Living.

The Lights Were Blinking

Some giant behemoths of green
Stood tall and dark—
Some eyes peeked out from
Blurred windshields,
And stones seemed like plants.

I imagined myself standing
Before the vast sea in the
Dead of the night
When the lights were blinking;
Then the lights were dim,
Then the lights were no more.

Hot trodden melted grass
Was masked by the smell of rats—
Trampled by oblivious feet,
Hypocrisy was on the high.
Green reflected green light.

I was trapped by some fear of the unknown,
When the lights were blinking,
When the lights were dim,
And when the lights were no more.

Some lonely hearts cried out
The name of their long-lost love,
And some were reading Drayton
With saline eyes.

At midnight amid pitch darkness,
The ghostly lights blinked again,
They were dim,
And were no more.

The lights have been a part of this
‘Happily-lived’ life;
The lights have shown me the track
When the world was sleeping,
Thinking of its own troubles.

I recall strolling in a lonely evening years back:
Colored beams and shops and people,
All turned into haze,
Only did I see the flickering street lights.
It cast a shadow,
And I believed.

The lights seem like a dream sometimes;
When watching me with queer eyes
From a very close distance,
I feel uneasy.

When thoughts and thoughts came again,
The lights blinked again;
Were becoming dim and were no more.

A few years from that night,
I haven’t seen those lights another time,
And I don’t know when I shall see them again.
